With a number of commercial scale energy from biomass plants operational in Northern Ireland at present, CASE Research will focus on optimising the efficiency of the plant in terms of operational capacity and optimising the resource feedstock.

He joined WRAP in 2003 to head WRAP’s Northern Ireland delivery for its funders and partners and has established WRAP Northern Ireland as a key resource efficiency delivery body. Dr Aoife Foley is a Lecturer and a Principle Investigator in the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering in Queen's University Belfast. She is a recognised expert in renewable energy forecasting and energy systems integration. The Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy (CASE) is an industry-led sustainable energy research centre. Andrew holds an honours degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and spent fourteen years with British Coal prior to entering local government in 1993. He has worked in the fields of materials resource management, industrial waste management, environmental management system development, wastewater treatment, contaminated land regeneration, chemical manufacturing and production process research and development.

He continues to play a pivotal role within the council, leading teams in energy management, Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations and the annual electricity and gas tender processes for the majority of local councils. He has over 20 years sustainability experience working in several private and public sector organisations including Seagate Technology, FG Wilson, Bombardier, AES, Queen’s University Belfast, Ulster University and the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Adrian runs AD Sustainability, a CSR and environmental consultancy based in Larne. Patricia is a former Executive Director of Sustainable NI before moving to North Down Borough Council in 2013 where she became responsible for sustainability, environmental management and biodiversity. We can also signpost companies to other grant support through Invest NI, UK Government, the EU and Internationally. Her unique interdisciplinary background in civil, transport and energy engineering with her industry and academic experience in electrical and mechanical engineering gives her a special understanding and knowledge of the complex interactions between the technical, social and economic challenges to energy technology deployment in real world environments. The results of CASE R&D also provide a solid base for influencing local government policy in the sustainable energy sector and we proactively promote Northern Ireland’s sustainable energy innovation capability within government circles. Aoife is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of Engineers Ireland and a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Authority and a member of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) and Power Energy Society (PES). Andrew has also worked as an environmental consultant for Jacobs. The NISEP is a customer levy with 80% of funds targeted at providing vital energy efficiency measures to low income households throughout Northern Ireland. He is an approved NEBOSH environmental trainer and holds a BSc Hons in Environmental Technology and a MSc in Management and Corporate Governance. Leo is actively involved in the Community Planning process, developing a strategy for the Council area to achieve its goal of a low carbon economy by engaging with the wider community, industry and the public sector. Northern Ireland is one of the best tidal energy resources in Europe and research in this area is required to reduce the levelised cost of energy to compete with offshore wind.

Currently, Northern Ireland’s renewable energy policy is being guided by the Strategic Energy Framework, published in 2010. A 40% renewable energy target by 2020 and an electricity grid requiring significant investment to deliver on these renewable targets provides plenty of opportunity for innovation through R&D. In Northern Ireland, Energy Saving Trust is the programme administrator, on behalf of the Utility Regulator, of the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP). Returning to NI, Leo joined Seagate Technology, during its initial start-up in Derry. Prior to joining the department, Susann held the following academic posts: Lecturer in Business Ethics at the University of Surrey, and Teaching Fellow in Marketing at Ulster University Business School, where she was also appointed to Course Director for the MSc Marketing programme. Leo is also Chair of the Local Government Sustainable Development Forum with a remit to promote and drive the sustainability agenda with local government. At WTTC, Susann was responsible for the successful execution of the coveted Tourism for Tomorrow Awards – a global, sustainable tourism award. SEAI's mission is to play a leading role in transforming Ireland into a society based on sustainable energy structures, technologies and practices. The Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy (CASE) is an industry-led sustainable energy research centre. We’ve listened to organisations operating in the sector and focused our research agenda in three strategic areas. Susann has ample industry experience; first, as Policy Initiatives Manager at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), and further as Operations Manager at environmental charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.

After 20 years working in the chemical industry, based in Cambridge, he moved to Northern Ireland in 2001. The Utility Regulator has recently confirmed that the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP) will be extended for a further year until March 2019. Dr Susann Power is a Lecturer in Hospitality Management at Ulster University Business School. She was responsible for the development of the Sustainability Audit Matrix and was a key contributor to the creation of the Sustainability Assessment Tool, both of which have been vital aids to councils in demonstrating their compliance with the Duty for Sustainable Development. She retired at the end of 2016. She is Editor in Chief of Elsevier’s Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews (2017) and is a member of the Editorial Panel of the Institution of Civil Engineers Proceedings in Transport.

Established in September 2013, we can access £5m of research grant to fund collaborative R&D projects in partnership with academics at Queen’s University Belfast, University of Ulster and the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute. Leo is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, a Chartered Environmentalist and a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. She returned to Northern Ireland in 1990. Biogas is of increasing importance and value as a biofuel, particularly for transport. Leo started his career working in the public sector, leading teams in maintenance and energy related projects in a nuclear reprocessing facility. Her multidisciplinary research activities are contained within the Intelligent Control (EPIC) research cluster in the School of Electronic, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Energy Power, the Risk and Inequality group in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics and in the Bryden Centre for Advanced Marine and Bio-Energy in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Andrew has held the position of Director of Environment & Property with Mid Ulster District Council since its inception in April 2015 following local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme. She also worked at the Institute of Public Health in Ireland. Ian has worked professionally in the field of environmental management for most of his career. Through the Invest Northern Ireland Competence Centre programme we fund collaborative Research & Development (R&D) in sustainable energy. He is a full member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and a Chartered Environmentalist.

Susann also holds a PhD in Sustainable Tourism from the University of Surrey.
