The only other major complaint that I have is with the story and characters. However, in my complete playthrough, I never once managed to find another player to join online, so can’t comment on how well this aspect works. Utawarerumono, as great as the series is, is incredibly niche. Utawarerumono Zan is clearly not meant to be an entry point for the series. The audio for these sequences was also excellent and added weight and satisfaction to landing big, heavy blows, accompanied as they were by exciting, crashing sounds.

So when you’re not being confused to the point of losing interest in the utterly disjointed and incomprehensible glossed-over story, you also have some combat to play through in the musou style of games.

Some have ranged attacks, some very slow yet powerful close-range attacks. Large swaths of the story are swept over in the story mode, and the title is first and foremost designed for existing fans of the series, to the extent that the opening cutscene outright spoils the ending to Mask of Deception. For example, in one section you’re battling warlords in a civil war, defeating them, and suddenly, following less than one minute of dialogue, you are thrown into an underground lab, fighting zombies and massive slime blobs, and expected to keep up and not question why?! Players who like visual novels generally aren’t playing Musou style fighting games, and if they are, there are numerous far better ones to play than this.

Although Zan does adapt the story of Mask of Deception, you really shouldn't be playing this game as your introduction to either Mask of Deception's plot or Utawarerumono as a whole. The ONLY players who would really understand the story element would be players who have already completed the 57-hour version of the story from the visual novel game Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception. But since there's no local co-op and it's all over PSN - finding 3 other people that also bought the game is probably something that only a handful of people will ever get to experience, which is a shame. The types of people that would be interested in Utawarerumono Zan would've already played both Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception AND Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, all while being interested in revisiting the first of the two game's events as a 3D Brawler -- that can't be a large target audience. Utawarerumono is a story centering around the masked protagonist, Hakuoro, who one day is found by a family of two girls and their grandmother in a nearby forest close to their village. Remove the combat, and the play-through time is closer to two hours. While you'll mostly be using the Square and Triangle buttons to string together combos - combat flows really well, and there manages to be a surprising amount of depth to everything, at least for the genre. Interesting, stylish graphics appear flashing across your screen during combat when great things happen, so much so that it all felt like a high production anime fight sequence was being played out on-screen in real-time. It does a fantastic job of making every character feel unique, while also maintaining a lot of their playstyle from the TRPGs. Even after you learn new abilities and unlock Final Strikes, everything's still all too samey. One of the bigger disappointments for the game should be addressed from the outset: Utawarerumono Zan’s story mode only covers the events of Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, meaning players will not get to see any of the events from Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth and miss out on the entire second, and much better, half of the duology, after Mask of Deception finally gets to … Unveil a lost legend in a new light with Utawarerumono: ZAN! That is what is happening here in Utawarerumono: ZAN. This though, brings it back to the question as to whom would buy this game to play online anyway? Don't get me wrong, it's great that Zan could get translated and brought over to the west at all, it just doesn't make much sense to me that any company would willingly do it.
