The Miss Fisher spin-off seems to operate in a parallel universe to the one we live in, but it's still a lot of fun.

Fledgling detective Phryne Fisher is known for her sharp wit and pearl-handled pistol, which she uses to fight injustice in Melbourne during the 1920s.

The series revolves around the personal and professional life of Peregrine Fisher, who inherits a fortune when the famous aunt she never knew goes missing. Which prompted her to climb into the back seat with Eric and, well, one thing led to another and before you know it a 10-minute break had turned into a lot of broken hair and Peregrine was out of a job.

Spin-off from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries featuring Miss Fisher's niece, who sets out to investigate her aunt's disappearance. Oh, it's ludicrous this show, but it's good-hearted with it. No sooner was little orphan Perry back at the trailer park when a letter arrived informing her she must head to Melbourne to claim the inheritance – a gorgeous modernist pile in South Yarra, complete with Austin Healey convertible in the driveway – that had been left to her by her aunt Phryne, who has been missing since her plane crashed in New Guinea (that's code for "busy making a Miss Fisher movie in London"). It's like a gals-only version of the X-Men, a multinational collection of ladies with special powers – microbiology, fencing, botany, the all-important fashion design – with former spy Birdie Birnside (Catherine McClements) its Professor X. Gritty realism is clearly not the territory this spin-off series of four telemovies is staking out.

In other words, Ms Fisher never met a '60s cliche it didn't like. It's Melbourne in 1964, but here the sun always shines, the populace is harmoniously diverse, both ethnically and sexually, and a woman with absolutely no qualifications at all is able to sashay her way into any place she likes, using nothing more than a bobby pin and an abundance of charm. Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries has a new spin-off TV series coming in 2019: Ms Fisher’s MODern Murder Mysteries.. Back in August of last year, when we first reported on Every Cloud Productions' aim to bring a Miss Fisher movie trilogy into theaters, it was notable that the big screen version wasn't the only Miss Fisher-related production the company was looking to launch. And if you're willing to suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours at a time, it's rather good fun too. After the murders of model Barbie Jones and designer Florence Astor, Peregrine uses her unorthodox sleuthing skills to catch the killer. In the first telemovie we got the murder of a model in an upscale department store; in this week's second, it's the electrocution of a pop star called Duane and a girl called Gidget on live TV (it's a wonderfully comical and horrifying demise, involving a surfboard suspended above a portable pool); in the third, a girl is seemingly abducted by aliens while a scientist is murdered in a top-secret government facility that's playing around with hallucinogens. Was it just a red herring? When Graham King's wife is murdered in an explosion that almost claims Peregrine too, the investigation exposes a maze of fraudulent activity. Peregrine convinces Eric to come clean about a past crime that will clear his name, and Violetta's hidden talents put her and Peregrine in danger. Check out episodes of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries by season.

The series of four telemovies is a spin-off of the drama series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, which was based on author Kerry Greenwood's series of Phryne Fisher detective novels. Oddly enough, we also learnt that Phryne didn't even know Peregrine existed, but let's not dwell. The plots run along much the same lines as your average episode of Scooby-Doo, only with a little more unresolved sexual tension thanks to the simmering attraction (more of a slow percolate, to be honest) between Peregrine and detective James Steed (Joel Jackson), who always arrives on the scene of the crime just after she does. When their prime suspect is murdered, Peregrine and James must admit that the killer's motives go far deeper than they had dared to consider. But still, you'd think someone might ask to see some ID before letting her in, just once. Phryne Fisher's big screen debut, Miss Fisher & The Crypt of Tears, remains a mystery, there is official word that the spinoff series is coming to America - and sooner than you might think.
