would the green new deal work

It would make us more innovative.

And there was a sense that China was really ascendant and America was decent. And what we really need to be looking at is, how do we make our cities and our assets, in terms of infrastructure and where we live– considering the rapid rate of global urbanization– how do we make our cities more resilient?

What are your thoughts about a Green New Deal?

It’s really to focus on the four zeros. Over the past decade, hundreds of programs across the U.S. have aimed to help disadvantaged Americans by preparing low-income workers to enter industries poised for growth, such as health care, information technology, and, yes, green energy.

THOMAS FRIEDMAN: A good friend of mine, wonderful man.

Actually a whole hour of Meet the Press was dedicated to climate change.

And so I think President Obama did a very good job with it on balance.

He’s based in Washington, D.C. IRA FLATOW: This is Science Friday.

These are external links and will open in a new window. I'd like to see them actually have to vote on it," said Representative Mike Simpson, a republican from Idaho. A group of young people have brought the idea back to the public consciousness. THOMAS FRIEDMAN: Well I would like to see legislation. Most said it's impossible to know exactly how many jobs it will add to the economy, but studies generally show that government investments in green technology boost employment possibilities. But scientists have been studying policies like these for decades, and their research can tell us a bit about what might happen should we pass this sweeping new vision for climate action and economic equality. Many commentators feel that right now, the Green New Deal is simply exacerbating the split between Republicans and Democrats on the issue of climate change, and allows the president to make all sorts of unsubstantiated comments on how it might impact on Americans. The plan is built around the recent warnings from scientists about the impacts on the planet of a temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius this century, above pre-industrial levels. You create a road map, just what you said, Ira, of what are the increasing standards we want every year in all of those?

How can you get the right-to-life movement on the right side to see that right-to-life involves an expanded version of life and sustainability on the planet to avoid extinction?

Which I guess would be just as accurate. THOMAS FRIEDMAN: Well, again, let’s just take the issue– I was just talking to someone the other day– solar panels. And then let just the best one win.

They’re defining it in their way, which I think is also fantastic.

Tell every oil and coal, every auto, every emissions company, every energy company, you’ve got to meet these standards– every building company– of efficiency, in these four areas. Many observers believe that the programme is high on ambition but is not a practical plan to tackle climate change. I’m ready to get behind it.

This would be incredibly difficult to achieve without some sort of major technology advance.

I don’t need to drag them out. But you got to kind of know this stuff to really know where the leverage points are. It could be focused on more agricultural orientation, but I want everyone to feel they can be part of this.

The Green New Deal, by setting out ending fossil fuel use as its explicit goal, is calling the bluff of the current pantomime policy. United States' contribution to climate change.

"This is an agenda setting exercise," Sarah Ladislaw from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies told BBC News. And Thomas Friedman joins us to talk about all of this.

And I love it from the Sunshine Movement as well. It's hard to predict exactly what will happen, researchers say, because the official proposal doesn't go into enough detail. Because I want rural people to feel that they will benefit from this, too.

It would make us a moral leader in the world. Don’t think you need subpoena power for that. there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 ; economic growth is decoupled from resource use; no person and no place is left behind; The European Green Deal is our plan to make the EU's economy sustainable. And I think that’s kind at the core of making this thing move among the larger part of the population, because basically the public trust doctrine, to boil it down, is about recognizing the rights of today’s children, non-voting age, and also unborn children of all future generations, to a property right in the resources that are being harmed, that are part of the fundamental sustainable machinery of our world.

IRA FLATOW: In paperback.

And if we start putting out impractical targets, we may lose a lot of key constituencies who we need to bring along to have a real low-carbon solution on the most rapid timeframe that we can achieve.".

Still, those jobs are central to the well-being of the people who hold them and their families. Talking about the Green New Deal. But, as I alluded to earlier in response to Ira’s question, again, I think, the way I do it is I frame this as an innovation opportunity, as an economic opportunity, as a moral leadership opportunity, and as actually geopolitical strategy. And understanding, and this has been my whole objective, that it’s innovative.

It would make us more competitive with China. And what happens, in every case, is that they achieve the goal sooner, faster, cheaper. We can both believe in math. Republican leader in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, said on Tuesday he will bring it to the Senate floor for a vote, so Democrats will have to back it or distance themselves from it. We are the tough guys.

Top fossil fuel-producing states, such as Wyoming, West Virginia, Texas, and Pennsylvania, might be in for a rough transition. The idea was recently proposed by newly elected Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; former President Obama put out a stimulus plan in 2008 that included elements of a Green New Deal.

The Green New Deal that some Democrats are now championing is unlike anything this country has ever done before.
I’m a big believer that to name something is to own it.

IRA FLATOW: Do you think we have turned a corner in climate change, at least talking about it?

IRA FLATOW: Quick call before we have to go to Brooklyn. I wouldn’t want it to turn into a kind of grilling of coal and oil companies. And so I’m really tightly focused around those things and not trying to get into the jobs question or health care. THOMAS FRIEDMAN: Well, again, I think before we’re done, because of the way that Sunrise and Ocasio-Cortez have put this on to the Democratic agenda again, I suspect we’re going to see, Ira, four or five versions of this. None of the new renewables can easily be relied upon to produce enough energy in winter. Some high-profile Democrats—most notably New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—have been championing it, getting it into headlines everywhere. ALAN: Yes, I hear very little discussion that includes the term the public trust doctrine lately. So what's in the deal and what will be its likely impact?

Kevin in Oakland, welcome to Science Friday.

And according to the UN, by 2030, there’ll be 8.2 billion. Friedman talks about what possible green proposals could entail and what obstacles it might face. Speaking in El Paso, he said the Green New Deal amounted to "taking away your car, taking away your plane flights". "It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive," she said. The study's researchers write that it's possible that four years wasn't long enough to see the effects of the training. So: If a 40 percent emissions cut cost $200 billion a year and created a net 2.7 million jobs, then a 100 percent emissions cut might cost $800 billion a year and create a net 6.8 million jobs.

To overcome these challenges, Europe needs a new growth strategy that will transform the Union into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy, where. IRA FLATOW: Tom Friedman, Foreign Affairs columnist for the New York Times and author of the book, still in print, Hot, Flat, and Crowded– Why We Need a Green Revolution, and How It Can Renew America.

You know when you change the power consumption in every Coke machine, you really impact the climate. THOMAS FRIEDMAN: Well, you just said. Right now, I want to see everybody getting their own version of it on the table.

I just want to say thanks for the show.

Look, Ira, we have the biggest electric utility in California going bankrupt, basically, because its technology allegedly triggered all these wildfires. The Green New Deal is not a specific policy proposal, but rather a general set of goals. But also, paired with that, you have to have realistic proposals that can cross party lines and that are framed in a narrow and focused enough way that people can say, OK, I get that. In this post, I try to explain at least a few of the issues involved. But that’s where my Green New Deal is focused right now. And so what the caller is saying is hugely important. Windswept states are likely to benefit from the Green New Deal.

THOMAS FRIEDMAN: Texas, Wyoming.

KEVIN: Oh, hi, I’m so excited to be talking with you. BOB: Hi.

Tesla grew out of that, among the other companies. And my friend, Hal Harvey, the CEO of Energy innovations came up with these. And that is really, I think, where we see sustainability. Republicans in Congress have criticized progressives' Green New Deal as an impractical, ludicrous, or even dangerous plan. So I don’t want to prejudge anything, because I think our politics is a really fluid place right now. However it goes well beyond questions of climate change, calling on the government to "guarantee a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations and retirement security to all people of the United States.".

THOMAS FRIEDMAN: You have the right congressional committee. 106 or something like that?

We’ll be right back after this break. THOMAS FRIEDMAN: Well the way I present it when I’m talking to climate doubters, I say, look, you don’t believe in climate change, I do. Hopefully the debate about which combination of policy approaches comes next.". And that’s how I try to frame it.

Yeah.
